BC Ballet presents two brand new world premiers inspired by Stravinsky's landmark The Rites of Spring. First performed in 1913, The Rites of Spring depicts the ancient spring rituals found in Russian folk law, including the pagan sacrifice of a young maiden to successfully usher in the season. Evocative and avant garde, the piece was considered so avant garde, the audience were moved to a near riot upon it's first performance.
Whilst BC Ballet are not expecting a riot, they aim to thrill with these two new works from innovative choreographers Emily Molnar and Gustavo Ramirez Sansano that channel the dynamism of the original whilst presenting a unique vision.
Programme:
New Work (Emily Molnar/Jeremey Schmidt)
Molnar presents a dreamlike world that delves into the unconcious, with music from Black Mountain's Jerermy Schmidt, the grand druid of cosmic space rock.
New Work (Gustavo Ramirez Sansano/Stravinsky)
Re-imagining the work from a 21st Century perspective, passion and style permeate this fresh work, set to Stravinsky's original score, with a contemporary percussive twist.
