Why See Vancouver Opera - Faust?
Having cleaved to his books for almost a lifetime, the aged scholar Faust is given the chance to relive his youth, The price? Well, that's up to the devious Mephistopheles to decide. Presented by the Vancouver Opera in a new to town production, discover anew Charles Gounod's richly textured tale of greed and temptation in all its sensational glory.
First performed in Paris in 1859, Faust is a powerhouse grand opera, told in 5 parts and based upon Goethe's book. The idea of a Faustian pact has been passed down through the decades, based on the unlucky deal with the devil made by the titular character.
Once the bargain is stuck, Doctor Faust finds himself a handsome young gentleman once again, ready to experience the hedonism and seduction he feels he has missed out on. As bait, Mephistopheles places the innocent Marguerite in his way. Once debauched by the infernal pair, she must find a way to deliver herself from temptation and save her soul...
