At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert's beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. he's soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary odyssey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land.

But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

The National's new epic is based on the celebrated novel by the British Children's Laureate (2003-05) Michael Morpurgo. Actors working with magnificent, life-sized puppets by the internationally renowned Handspring Puppet Company lead us on a gripping journey through history.

excellant production

Saw this production in Toronto and was thoroughly blown away. I had seen the movie twice, and the theatre production was so realistic and the puppetry so professional, one forgot very quickly that this was a play. I would see again in a minute. ... Read more

War Horse indigenous characters a disappointment

Went to see War Horse last night at the Queen E. The handspring puppets were magical! I am still marveling at what they accomplished which was make the audience believe a 1000 lbs. horse is alive on the theater stage. Disappointing were the casting of some of the characters, particularly that of the young French girl.......what were the directors thinking when they cast a girl of obvious Chinese descent. Yes, she was a very good actress but that did not take away from the fact that she is supposed to be a french girl living in the countryside during WW1! This aside, the play was very good. ...
