Beware the attentions of Carmen!
The sultry streets of Seville come to life in Georges Bizet's iconic Carmen. One of the most recognizable operas in the canon, this sizzling tale of lust and betrayal runs the gamut from passionate romance to tragedy, belayed by Bizet's unforgettable score. Directed by Rachel Peake, this blockbuster production stars the excellent Sandra Piques Eddy (April 27th and May 2nd & 4th) and Carolyne Sproule (April 28th and May 5th) as the titular Carmen.
What is the story?
The opera follows Carmen, a fiery, provocative gypsy woman at odds with the conventions of Spain in the early 18th century. Able to seduce men with her dulcet tones and feminine wiles, Carmen ensnares the heart of Don Jose, who drops everything, including his betrothed Micaela, to be with her. When Carmen tires of her latest conquest, she leaves him for the handsome bullfighter Escamillo, setting off harrowing and ultimately fatal events fuelled by jealousy, obsession, and murderous rage.
