Come From Away

Come From Away at The Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage

Why see Come From Away?

Flying To You!

The hit musical Come From Away tells the remarkable true story of human endurance and bravery under extraordinary circumstances. Since its Broadway debut, the production has earned critical acclaim worldwide, winning the Tony Award for Best Direction and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical.

What Is Come From Away About?

On September 11, 2001, as the world reacted to the terror attacks in the United States, North American airspace was closed, grounding thousands of passengers. An astonishing 38 planes were forced to land in Gander, a remote Newfoundland town with a population of just 9,000 people. The sudden arrival of these travelers nearly doubled the town's population overnight.

Come From Away focuses on the Gander residents and the diverse set of passengers they welcomed into their homes. The story weaves together the experiences of characters based on real people, including American Airlines’ first female captain, a gay couple both named Kevin, and an Egyptian chef who finds unexpected kindness in a time of uncertainty. Together, their stories create an affirming portrait of how strangers can become family in the most trying of times.

Did You Know?

The musical gets its title from local Newfoundland terminology; the residents of Gander traditionally refer to anyone not born on the island as "come from aways."

Extraordinary story and production

I saw this when it opened on Broadway and absolutely loved it. This touring cast did a very good performance but there were sound issues for us on the mezzanine level. We missed about 30% of the spoken and singing dialogue as a result. The heavy Texan accent of the female airline captain was extremely difficult to decipher at times whereas the New York performance was 100% clear. Some of the Newfie dialogue was also extremely difficult to follow, even though I knew the story already. This was frustrating because my partner missed a lot of the details. Early in the performance, when the policeman described pulling over motorists and giving them a warning, the punchline got a laugh from some of the audience but the mezzanine audience could not really hear what he said regarding STFD. It was still a very enjoyable performance overall, but I was spoiled by having seen the original female lead on Broadway. She really was a standout whereas this cast was a solid performance among 12. ... Read more

Horrible sound design

Great play in every way , except for the sound design, incredibly frustrating to not be able to hear the dialogue.! Had to leave 3/4 through last night in Vancouver. Went my Newfie friend , I was driving her crazy with a question of what was said every minute.! Get that right .and I would love to go again ... Read more
