WHAT'S WRONG WITH LOVE?

I saw Neil Young at the Greek Theater in UIC Berkeley and the Oxbow River stage in Napa. I was glad to hear him play whatever songs he chooses. He is 77 years old, so the days of CSNY are long gone. Watch the classics you want on Youtube. I hope he continues to tour and play in smaller venues.

OKAY, FINE.

The Neil Young live show was unexpectedly mellow & chill, but included enough electric moments for my taste. It has been my experience that performances of longtime stars evolve over time, and often the evolution is characterized by a shift from edgy, energetic, & loud to softer, slower, & reflective. The tone and tempo of Neil’s performance was fine with me.

BIG SCREENS A NO SHOW

Loved the concert overall. . Bummer though that the big screens which really add to the concert experience at the Shell were not in use. Only those in the most expensive seats upfront could actually see Neil. And front Bridgeview is usually a fairly good location. Was that Neil’s decision or Ticketmaster’s?

ALWAYS DIFFERENT

When you go and see Neil you never know which Neil Young will show up. You have the Electric Neil, the acoustic Neil, the country Neil. Last night it was mostly the acoustical Neil. He seemed subdued, very quiet, unsure what he would play next and the encore was just weird. 1 song on the ukulele. Concert was short but if you like Neil you loved it.

SUCH PROMISE, BUT.....

Neil seemed old (and I'm 67!) and confused. 4 pianos onstage, 2 went untouched. 6 guitars, 3 went untouched. The highlights were brilliant but not sustained through consecutive songs. New music is cool, but less so without introduction. Clearly, no thought put into the setlist equals a less evocative concert. A great artist captured on an uninspired evening.

ALITTLE DISAPPOINTED

Neil still can bring at 73 his voice is still great but last nights show had too much focus on the band Promise of the Reel and not on Neil. Way too much of the new songs and not enough of the old. I was very disappointed he didn't play Old man, Cinnamon girl or Harvest moon I'm sure I wasn't the only one shaking their heads after those encores

MISSED THE MARK AT THE SHELL

Neil Young sounded good, despite the very eclectic song mix. Problem was unless you were in the front section (spent $500 - 1000 per ticket), you really couldn’t see him. Stage lighting was marginal, but the biggest problem was not using the large video monitors at The Shell. Ticketmaster packs the venue with single seats, no table sections like SD Symphony setup. Most of the reasonably priced seats (<$500) were too far away from the stage for a good view., especially for a one-man show. That’s where the superb video system comes in. I’ve seen at least 20 shows since the new venue opened. The HD video screens make it a great experience regardless of where you’re sitting. If I knew that the video system was not going to be used, I would have saved my money and just listened to the show from the adjacent city park.
